Tour de France in the Pyrenees

The Tour de France goes through the Pyrenees every year, and it’s the Pyrenees that often make or break the leader of the Tour de France.

Once again the Tour de France will descend the Col des Ares (5 minute walk from us) for the 2010 Tour. Indeed the Tour is in the Pyrenees for a fabulous 5 stages as it celebrates 100 years since going through the Pyrenees. The Col du Tourmalet is used twice in 2010.

The King of the Mountains leader wearing the red polka dot jersey can change hands easily in the spectacular Pyrenees Mountains.

Our gites are nestled at the foot of the Col des Ares, a popular Tour de France climb, and within a few kilometres of our gites you can access the Col de Mente, Col de Portillon, Col de Peyragudes and the Port de Bales (inaugural climb for the Tour de France in 2007).

The Col du Tourmalet, perhaps the Tour de France most famous climb for the cyclists in the Pyrenees is 1 ˝ hours drive from us.

Pyrenees Holiday Gites Laroca

Wednesday 16th July 2008: Lannemezan - Foix.

We went with some great people that stayed at Pyrenees Holiday Gites to Barabazan, just up the road from us, for this stage.

Not often shown on television is the “caravanne”; a procession of floats, cars and vans that drive the route before the arrival of the riders, handing out sweets, hats, key rings and more goodies from the various sponsors of the Tour de France; the atmosphere is amazing and everyone is in party mood whilst picnicking with a bottle of wine in the sun and awaiting the arrival of the cyclists.

For the Pyrenees section of the Tour de France, we are situated perfectly for cycling enthusiasts.

Some great photos taken from the 2010 Tour de France going over the Col des Ares.
