Mountain Walks in the Pyrenees

This page describes some of the free and easily accessible mountain walks to be enjoyed by young and old in the Midi Pyrenees, South West France.

There are loads of walks that you can do in the Pyrenees, and we’ve found some really nice walks not too far from us. We also have several books and maps for you to borrow, plus you can pick our brains for our local knowledge.

Lac d’Oo is a good walk, a bit hard going at times, but when you reach the lake it is worth the climb. A great place to take a picnic and enjoy the splendour of the Pyrenees.

Within a 2 hour drive is the Cirque de Gavarnie. A spectacular natural structure. This photo was taken in May 2008.
The Pyrenees are formed with many horseshoe shape valleys and a great number of lakes.

On the way up to Le Mourtis ski resort there is a lovely short walk up L’Escallette. On the rocky outcrop at the top there are stunning views of the Pyrenees.

Many of the walks follow rivers and mountain streams, ideal for cooling off. Just across the border in Spain we went to Artigue above the village of Es Bordes for a great short walk ideal for families with stunning views and convenient stine picnic areas.
